I am passionate about the creative arts whether the medium is a book, song, painting, dance, movie — you get the picture. What I love about the process is it can be shared with others. We all have that favorite picture, song, etc., and it speaks to us. The artist might have had their own thought behind it in feeling, emotion and expression but we bring our own meaning to it and personalize it: It can be powerful in making a statement and bringing awareness to something; It can bring an emotional healing or one of those ah-ah moments. That is what I love about it.

The medium I have chosen is photography. I have always used Nikon equipment except for a wonderful digital Canon point-and-shoot. Actually in my earlier years, I had an 8x10 camera and also a plastic one. The plastic one was what I learned with at undergraduate school. I have two Nikon DSLRs. One of them is converted for infrared and I have a variety of Nikon lenes. I usually stick to one lens, a zoom, so I don't have to carry much when I shoot. Then there is the tripod, monopod, various flashes and accessories for lighting…

A firm foundation in what makes a good picture is as important as a foundation in art. Once that is achieved you must learn how to use your medium so it doesn't get in the way. It should be an extension of you. The medium in this case is the camera. The beauty of digital is shoot, shoot, shoot…there is no cost in film and processing while learning.
